Spring photo sessions are an awesome time to show off your unique style! Picking out outfits for a photo session can be a challenge, though! In fact, one of the most common questions I get asked as a photographer is: “What should I wear??” So, I have picked up some tips and tricks for picking out the perfect outfit for your spring photo session.
Keep it fresh!
Spring is a beautiful season of growth and refreshment. The weather is getting warmer, plants and trees are blossoming, and everything is turning green! A great way to keep your spring photo session outfit fresh is by wearing bright colors. I’m not saying that neutrals are out of style—they definitely have their place! But spring photo sessions really lend to colorful, bright, and pastel outfits and styles.
In the Studio
Indoor photo sessions in the spring can be light, airy, and welcoming. If you are incorporating elements of growth, like plants or flowers, make sure that the color scheme of your props complements the outfit you choose. Spring also means warmer weather, so lighter-weight outfits fit into a spring photo session well. There can still be cooler weather in the spring, though, so make sure and dress appropriately for the weather, even if your session is indoors. Flowy dresses, boho themes, and chic styles will look extra beautiful in the spring!
Here at my studio, the feel is very modern. There is a lot of white space, including a clean, white brick wall. I also have a variety of other solid backgrounds and props that will make bright and pastel outfits pop!
Outdoors
It can be lots of fun picking out your outfit for an outdoor photo session in the spring. There are a few things to keep in mind, though! Spring weather can mean rain, mud, and some colder days. Look at the forecast to check if you’ll need to wear a jacket to your session. Make sure and bring appropriate shoes for the weather, especially if there might be rain or mud. You can always bring shoes to walk in and an extra pair of shoes for during the photo session so you can stay comfortable and keep your feet clean and dry. That being said, spring scenery is so fun to photograph! Think of bright skies, green grass, and blossoming flowers. Take advantage of the spring views and coordinate your outfit to fit colorful and airy days.
Seniors and Portraits
If you are taking portraits this spring, pick out an outfit with colors that complement your skin tone and hair. The brighter colors and daylight will bring out cool tones already, so try dressing in colors that warm up your skin tone.
Couples and Families
Couples and families getting photos taken during the spring have lots of options for coordinating outfits. If you are taking family photos for Easter, many families like to coordinate colors that blend well together. For example, you might choose two complementary accent colors and incorporate these colors in everyone’s outfits.
Springtime Photo Tips and Tricks
I absolutely love taking photos during the spring, so here are some additional tips and tricks for your spring session:
-
I’ve said it, but I’m going to say it again: Be prepared for inclement weather! April showers bring May flowers, so spring can be especially rainy and muddy. Don’t be caught off guard by the weather!
-
It’s best to schedule outdoor spring sessions after the middle of May in Minnesota, that way you are guaranteed color, and trees will be budding by then.
-
Just because it’s spring, doesn’t mean you have to wear pastels or light-colored clothing. Bright, vibrant, and textured clothing (such as lace, knits, or jackets) adds a fun element to outdoor sessions.
And as always, tools like Pinterest provide great outfit inspiration! I also offer an exclusive styling service to my clients that helps to coordinate the best outfits for your sessions. Each person will go through and ‘like’ clothing items and then you will get an email with some outfit ideas and where to buy the items.
This is an exclusive service I offer my customers, so reach out and book your session today to have access!
